Cookie Policy.
We use cookies so the Newsroom works, so we know what readers love, and — with your permission — to fund free journalism through advertising. Here's exactly what we use and how to change your mind.
For our full data-protection commitments, see the Privacy Policy.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently, remember your preferences, and provide reporting information to the site owner. Some cookies stay on your device until they expire or you delete them; others are removed as soon as you close your browser.
How we use cookies
Hinton (Hinton Media Limited) uses cookies in the following ways:
- Strictly necessary — to keep you signed into the Newsroom, remember your category preferences, and route you through the site securely.
- Performance & analytics — to understand which articles are read, where readers come from, and how long they stay, so we can commission better journalism. We use PostHog for product analytics.
- Advertising — third parties such as Google AdSense may set cookies to show advertising relevant to you and measure its effectiveness. These cookies are only set if you accept them in our cookie banner.
Third-party cookies on Hinton
We work with the following third-party providers, each of whom may set their own cookies on your device. Visit their privacy pages for full details and opt-out options:
- Google AdSense — advertising delivery and measurement. See policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
- Google Consent Mode v2 — records your cookie preference so we can apply it across the site.
- PostHog — anonymous product analytics. See posthog.com/privacy.
- Wix Media — hosts images imported from our previous platform. These are CDN cookies, not tracking cookies.
Managing your preferences
When you first visit Hinton you'll see a banner asking whether you accept cookies. You can change your choice at any time:
- Re-open the cookie banner using the "Cookie settings" link in our footer.
- Clear the cookies set by hintononline.com from your browser settings — we'll show you the banner again on your next visit.
- Disable cookies entirely in your browser. Note that some parts of the Newsroom (sign-in, saved preferences) will not work without them.
Advertising & Consent Mode v2
We use Google AdSense to fund our newsroom. AdSense may set cookies to deliver advertising that is relevant to you and measure its performance. We implement Google's Consent Mode v2: visitors in the UK, EU and EEA see ads with no personalisation cookies by default until they actively grant permission via our banner. Visitors elsewhere can still reject all advertising cookies at any time.
If you have an interest-based advertising opt-out preference set with Google, we respect it.
Do Not Track
Our site does not currently respond to Do Not Track browser signals because there is no industry-agreed standard for what to do with them. We do, however, respect every choice you make via our cookie banner, and we honour all GDPR rights described in our Privacy Policy.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in technology, regulation, or our practice. When we do, we'll update the "Last reviewed" date below. Material changes will also be flagged via our cookie banner.
