In the Act of Becoming: A Celebration of Identity, Leadership, and Art in Lagos

Titled In the Act of Becoming: An Ode to Self and Story, this compelling showcase explores the remarkable life and legacy of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo while delving into universal themes of resilience, personal evolution, and leadership.

Unlike a traditional retrospective, the exhibition seeks to peel back the layers of Obasanjo’s life, offering a multidimensional narrative that resonates far beyond the political realm. Curated to inspire reflection and dialogue, the exhibition weaves together archival materials, striking photography, and contemporary art by two rising Nigerian artists, Azeez Salami and Ibrahim Bamidele. Their works bring a vibrant, modern perspective to the timeless themes of identity and transformation, bridging the gap between Obasanjo’s extraordinary journey and the universal quest for purpose and self-understanding.

The exhibition also serves as the debut project for The Vanguard Gallery, a visionary space founded by a 26-year-old London-based, Lagos-raised Nigerian gallerist. With a mission to celebrate contemporary Black art and pose the provocative question, “But aren’t we magnificent?” The Vanguard Gallery aims to challenge perceptions and elevate conversations about identity and heritage.
