Five European countries that are still warm in winter

As the temperature drops and dark evenings draw closer, it’s clear that winter is just around the corner. This time of year signals a desire to escape the cold and recharge somewhere sunny. With over 40% of Brits considering or going on a winter trip last year, it’s clear it’s a relatively popular time to go away.

Holiday

There is also an abundance of destinations that can still provide a warm climate throughout the season. Here are some ideas for a winter sun holiday if you’re looking for some nice weather.

Canary Islands

Located off the coast of northwestern Africa, the Canary Islands usually offer year-round sunshine. There are seven main islands, with Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Gran Canaria being popular options and temperatures typically range from 18-24°C.

Each location has its own unique charm, from volcanic landscapes and hiking in Tenerife to Fuerteventura’s famous beaches and ideal windsurfing conditions. Gran Canaria boasts gorgeous mountainous regions, while Lanzarote is also a great setting for outdoor activities.

Greece

Greece offers a pleasant climate throughout December, January and February and the islands are usually warmer than the mainland.

The season normally brings fewer crowds too so you can enjoy a more relaxed experience exploring archaeological sites, museums and rugged landscapes. Plus, you can sample world-renowned dishes like souvlaki and gyros, without the tourist rush.

Sicily

While temperatures here can dip as low as 6°C, they can also reach a comfortable 17°C, making the Mediterranean’s largest island one of the more pleasant European destinations.

Sicily is known for its natural wonders and historical significance. From exploring the Valley of the Temples to hiking around Mount Etna, this destination is for relaxation and adventure.

Malta

Malta is a great choice for those seeking a blend of culture, history and a comfortable climate. This small island boasts weather that rarely falls below 15°C and can reach around 17°C.

During your stay, you’ll have a balance of city life, coastal relaxation and historical exploration. You can wander the narrow streets of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or discover Gozo’s beautiful gorges.

Winter is also an ideal opportunity to visit the megalithic temples, without the summer crowds.

Algarve, Portugal

With a beautiful coastline and stunning beaches, this region is an excellent holiday spot and enjoys temperatures of up to 20°C in winter. The Algarve’s dramatic cliffs and charming towns offer plenty to see and do, such as walking along the coast or visiting the historic city of Faro.

The season’s tourist footfall is much lower too, making it a wonderful time to go if you prefer a more peaceful escape. Golf enthusiasts can also take advantage of the many courses, which remain open year-round.
